With sweeping stretches of beach set against the boundless Atlantic Ocean, it's no wonder the English pilgrims who landed on this island appropriately named it Eleuthera, the Greek word for “freedom.” Clear, blue waters and massive coral reefs make this a prime destination for snorkeling and diving while exploring underwater marine life and shipwrecks. Be sure to visit Devil’s Backbone, a shallow and jagged reef extending across the northern edge of Eleuthera. This reef has torn the bottom out of more vessels than any other reef in the nation. Thrill-seekers will want to swim through the rip-roaring drift dive called Current Cut. Other remarkable attractions include the subterranean Preacher's Cave which sheltered the island’s founders and was home to their vigils, mile-long Hatchet Bay Cave filled with stalagmites and stalactites, and the Glass Window Bridge that spans the gap where the turbulent waters of the Atlantic meet the calmer seas of Exuma Sound on the island's leeward side. Eleuthera is an hour’s flight from most airports in South Florida.
